Aliment\u00e9e par le Myrdalsj\u00f6kull, une calotte de glace de 800\u00a0km2 au sud de l\u2019\u00eele, la rivi\u00e8re Markarflj\u00f3t contourne le petit glacier Eyjafjallaj\u00f6kull par le nord, dessinant un trac\u00e9 h\u00e9sitant sur une large plaine de s\u00e9diments basaltiques, et termine sa course sur une plage de sable noir bordant l\u2019Atlantique. Comme tous les torrents glaciaires, elle se r\u00e9pand sur une plaine d\u2019\u00e9vacuation glaciaire en un r\u00e9seau dense de chenaux anastomos\u00e9s. Son cours varie constamment et atteint son d\u00e9bit maximal en juillet et en ao\u00fbt, au plus fort de la fonte des glaces. Le changement climatique, provoquant une intensification du ph\u00e9nom\u00e8ne, pourrait perturber ce rythme saisonnier naturel. Des glaciologues islandais ont signal\u00e9 que la calotte glaciaire du Vatnaj\u00f6kull, la plus vaste du pays avec une surface de 8\u00a0300\u00a0km2\u00a0(l\u2019\u00e9quivalent de tous les glaciers d\u2019Europe continentale r\u00e9unis), perdrait pr\u00e8s d\u2019un m\u00e8tre d’\u00e9paisseur de glace par an depuis quelques ann\u00e9es, tandis que la pluie se substitue \u00e0 la neige en de\u00e7\u00e0 de\u00a01\u00a0000\u00a0m.
