Situ\u00e9 sur la faille de la Rift\u00a0Valley, le lac\u00a0Magadi contient une exceptionnelle concentration de soude caustique, produite naturellement par la transformation des s\u00e9diments au contact des eaux de ruissellement et des laves en fusion sous le lac. Cette concentration est si forte et la profondeur du lac si faible, qu\u2019une \u00e9paisse cro\u00fbte de cristaux de soude le recouvre en partie, ce qui a permis l\u2019installation de la plus ancienne exploitation mini\u00e8re du Kenya, la Magadi Soda Company, au d\u00e9but du si\u00e8cle.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Autrefois l\u2019eau de ce lac \u00e9tait douce (comme l\u2019est encore celle des lacs voisins Naivasha ou Baringo). Il \u00e9tait peupl\u00e9 d\u2019hippopotames, de crocodiles et de poissons. Aujourd\u2019hui, seule subsiste une faune limit\u00e9e de poissons microscopiques et des algues primitives qui attirent les flamants. L\u2019abondance de soude constitue un danger pour ces derniers. Quand il ne pleut pas suffisamment, le lac s\u2019ass\u00e8che et l\u2019eau qui subsiste se transforme en une \u00e9paisse gel\u00e9e de soude qui se cristallise autour des pattes des poussins, sauv\u00e9s par la seule intervention des \u00e9quipes du Service des parcs nationaux. Les transformations de la plan\u00e8te ne sont pas caus\u00e9es seulement par l\u2019homme, cet apprenti sorcier, mais aussi par une dynamique autonome o\u00f9 les volcans jouent comme ici un r\u00f4le essentiel.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
