En s\u2019\u00e9vaporant, les eaux qui alimentent cette sebkha (lac sal\u00e9 temporaire) ont creus\u00e9 des rides dans le sable o\u00f9 affleurent des d\u00e9p\u00f4ts de sel. Les sebkha peuvent \u00eatre d\u2019importantes ressources \u00e9conomiques, comme ici au c\u0153ur du Sahara occidental, une r\u00e9gion qui s\u2019\u00e9tire sur 2 500 km le long de l\u2019Atlantique et couvre une surface grande comme la moiti\u00e9 de la France. Autrefois colonie espagnole, ce territoire au sous-sol riche en phosphate et aux c\u00f4tes poissonneuses fut revendiqu\u00e9 par le Maroc lors du d\u00e9part des Espagnols en 1975, contre la volont\u00e9 de ses habitants, les nomades Sahraouis, repr\u00e9sent\u00e9s par le Front Polisario, lui-m\u00eame soutenu par l\u2019Alg\u00e9rie.<\/p>\n

Bien qu\u2019aucune souverainet\u00e9 ne lui ait \u00e9t\u00e9 reconnue, le Maroc brisa la r\u00e9sistance sahraouie en \u00e9difiant en plein d\u00e9sert huit murs de 300 km de long, qui s\u00e9parent toujours de nombreuses de familles. Depuis le d\u00e9but du conflit, en novembre 1975, le Front Polisario a captur\u00e9 plus de 2 000 soldats marocains, mais \u00e0 la suite de la tr\u00eave des combats concluse en 1991 sous l\u2019\u00e9gide de l\u2019ONU, le Front Polisario a rel\u00e2ch\u00e9 la plupart d\u2019entre eux. L\u2019Organisation des Nations Unies s\u2019est vu confi\u00e9 la mission d\u2019organisation d\u2019un r\u00e9f\u00e9rendum d\u2019autod\u00e9termination, \u00e0 se jour sans succ\u00e8s.<\/p>\n

D\u00e9sormais les Marocains install\u00e9s dans la r\u00e9gion sont aujourd\u2019hui plus nombreux que les Sahraouis d\u2019origine. Quelque 100 000 Sahraouis sont toujours r\u00e9fugi\u00e9s en Alg\u00e9rie. Le dialogue entre les deux parties a repris mais aucune issue au conflit n\u2019a encore \u00e9t\u00e9 trouv\u00e9e.
